In 1984, Fine Arts in Rockbridge (FAIR) and Sherri Lamont founded a community ballet to allow aspiring local dancers an opportunity to perform. The fledgling group consisted of three area adults and three teenagers, one of whom went on to become a professional dancer.

It was the beginning of twenty-five years of

turning out professional dancers, dance teachers

and choreographers.
The past seven years have effected exceptional growth. With energy, vision and determination, the Ballet board incorporated as an independent non-profit organization, hired professional dancers to perform with the dance company, introduced live music, expanded the corps de danse to thirty members, and, in the 2010 season, initiated partnerships with other performing arts organizations and other dance schools.

In 2010 the Ballet opened the county's first and only not-for-profit dance and arts school, TheStudio. TheStudio offers dance instruction founded on the traditions of classical ballet to produce honed bodies and disciplined spirits.
